Stages of the cold sore virus

Tingle

Days: 1- 2 Before any visible symptoms appear, you may feel a tingle, itch and/or burning sensation. This is often called the "Tingle Stage" and can last from a few hours to days.

Days: 2-4 After the itchy, tingly stage, the site of the cold sore gradually develops into a blister or a small group of blisters, surrounded by red and swollen skin.

Open Sore

Days: 4 After a day or so these burst to produce the typical open sore.

Scab

Days: 5-8 Like a sore anywhere on your body, these sores gradually dry up and form a crusty scab, which is usually a yellow-brown colour.

healing

Healing

Days: 8-10 The sore gradually heals. The scab falls off over a few days and should completely disappear after around 10 days, or faster (compared to no treatment) if you apply Zovirax Antiviral Cream as directed on pack. The area may be a bit swollen for a few days.
